this book has stayed with me and shifted my course.

Meghan Genge's book is one of those rare finds that gathers the tenderest pieces of hope and wondering and brings them into the light where possibility is more than just a nice thought but a deep medicine. In the metaphors and the characters I have found some deeply moving ideas that have woken me up and helped me to lift into new ways of being in the world. I am not often moved to write reviews but I feel like tapping women in bookstores on the shoulder and telling them about this (in a non creepy way!) If you are looking for a book to shake you up lovingly then this might be it. I am buying copies for my friends and can't wait to talk to them about it.

Every woman should be the heroine of their own story

I was intrigued at the opportunity to read this given the introduction into the book and not fully knowing what to expect. I had an idea that it would contain some metaphysical elements but I didn't expect the story to expand as it did. I was hooked on Melissa's character and wished to know more. In many cases I felt that it was like the Matrix meets woman determined to be "awake" in a sleeping world. This book is the perfect read for anyone trying to find themselves on a path that seems to be all tangled. The imagery is so vivid I felt that I was along the ride for visual meditations while I was reading. Recommend highly ...

I rarely write reviews. This book required one.

I bought this book (Kindle version) on Friday morning upon hearing about it via a friend on Facebook. I was immediately intrigued because it reminded me, in some ways, of books like the Celestine Prophecy (and series) + The Alchemist. My intention was to only start on the book that morning because I had so much already planned for the day. Several hours later I looked up to realize that everything else had needed to wait, and in fact... I'd gone ahead and finished the book. It was worth it. There were times when, as I was reading, I thought "Well here's what this means, and here's where this is headed, I can see it coming a mile away!"... but I actually think that was the point. I think the author wanted to make sure that her points were received. They were for me. So much so, in fact, that I've decided to go ahead and launch a couple of offers that I'd been putting off due to fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of being judged, fear that I wasn't ready. No more. Not only that, I'm finally feeling ready to heal some issues I have had around not feeling my feelings... about stuffing them down vs feeling them... about stuffing myself with food vs allowing myself what my soul really wants.

All this to say:

If you've seen it all and done it all and are still unhappy with your life... skip it. You're not ready.

if you're ready to see yourself, if you're ready for change (and not just platitudes), if you're ready to be open & accepting.... buy this book + read this book + start taking action = the change you'd like in your life.

Concise and full of insights in today's volatile market.

The most common advice given to both experienced and new investors is to "seek value." Here, at last is a book that tells how to do this.Extremely thorough and well organized, "How to be a Value Investor" is noteworthy for its clarity. Readers are taken on an interesting tour which defines value investing, tells how to seek values, gives pointers on fundamentals of balance sheets and income statements, and tackles the difficult question "when to sell." Many examples are given to reinforce the text. The historical perspective also is useful. I found most helpful the section on how the experts seek bargains. There is also information on online investing and a list of websites for value investors.The book is exceptionally timely now, when stock indices are at lofty levels and the challenge to select the right investments never has been greater.Concise and full of insights on succeeding in today¹s volatile markets, this should be indispensable reading for investors trying to improve portfolio performance. There are few volumes on this subject that could be called "page turners," but from my experience, the author hit a home run in this regard.

Disappointing

The book is OK on general principles-Don't time the market; Study companies; Diversify; Develop your own investment plan, Etc. But I bought the book for specifics of value investing-how to read and evaluate annual reports and financial statements. I was expecting chapters 3 and 4 to be the most helpful of the book. Unfortunately I did not find that to be the case-information on how to evaluate annual reports and financial statements could have been more detailed and complete and there are confusions/errors about some of the key evaluative tools.
Current Ratio: Pages 43 and 53 says a Current Ratio of 2 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 2 OR MORE! Actually I think it is 2 or more-because there should be no more than $1 of current liabilities for every $2 of current assets.
Quick Ratio: Pages 43 and 54 say a Quick Ratio of 1 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 1 OR MORE (Appendix A says 1 to 10). Actually I think it is 1 or more-because a company should be able to cover all its current liabilities with current assets less inventory.
Financial formulas can be complicated and there may be no one clear-cut answer for all situations. If so, a discussion should have been included to help readers apply these tools.
Gross Margin: Page 63 shows Walgreen to have a Gross Margin of 94%. It is not clear how a gross profit of 12,655,000 was arrived at-the closest thing I see is a total of costs and deductions on page 59 which is listed on the 10K as "net revenues". While this is most likely a minor glitch, it should have been caught by the author or editor.
Two other criticisms. First, the use of the charts by Bigcharts.com. What do they mean and how should I use them? If charts are included in a text, they should be clearly labeled and there should be an explanation of how to use them.
Second, choice of material on which to base the book. The author based some of the book on interviews (most by telephone) with 5 value investors. Why/how were these interviewees chosen? I think journalists who include interviews should explain the justification for their choice of interviewees. This really should also apply to the books chosen as references-and articles quoted.

Constructible and perverse sheaves are the algebraic counterpart of the decomposition of a singular space into smooth manifolds, a great geometrical idea due to R. Thom and H. Whitney. These sheaves, generalizing the local systems that are so ubiquitous in mathematics, have powerful applications to the topology of such singular spaces (mainly algebraic and analytic complex varieties).

This introduction to the subject can be regarded as a textbook on "Modern Algebraic Topology'', which treats the cohomology of spaces with sheaf coefficients (as opposed to the classical constant coefficient cohomology).

The first five chapters introduce derived categories, direct and inverse images of sheaf complexes, Verdier duality, constructible and perverse sheaves, vanishing and characteristic cycles. They also discuss relations to D-modules and intersection cohomology. The final chapters apply this powerful tool to the study of the topology of singularities, of polynomial functions and of hyperplane arrangements.

Some fundamental results, for which excellent sources exist, are not proved but just stated and illustrated by examples and corollaries. In this way, the reader is guided rather quickly from the A-B-C of the theory to current research questions, supported in this by a wealth of examples and exercises.

About the Author

Biography Alexandru Dimca

Alexandru Dimca obtained his PhD in 1981 from the University of Bucharest. His field of interest is the topology of algebraic varieties, singularities of spaces and maps, Hodge theory and D-modules.

Dimca has been a visiting member of the Max Planck Institute in Bonn and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is the author of three monographs and over 60 research papers published in math journals all over the world.

Dimca has extensively taught at universities in Romania, Australia, the USA, and France, and he uses this teaching experience to convey effectively, to a wider mathematical community, the abstract and difficult ideas of algebraic topology.

Bright future for a budding author

I bought this book as a mother's day gift, and it's been passed around members of my family. It's an easy book to pick up, with 1 short poem per page. You can pick a page at random and read a poem each day if you don't have time to commit to reading a novel.

Everyone who's had a chance to read it so far has liked at least some of the poems inside. They're anywhere from funny, to uplifting, to pensive, to heartbreaking. Even the saddest poems are beautiful illustrations of a teenage girl from Minnesota just dealing with the hardships of life, and they're relatable to anyone who reads it.

Modern international law is widely understood as an autonomous system of binding legal rules. Nevertheless, this claim to autonomy is far from uncontroversial. Perception of this 'institutional problem' has therefore given rise to a certain disciplinary angst or self-defensiveness, fuelling a need to seek out functional analogues or substitutes for the kind of institutional roles deemed intrinsic to a functioning legal system. This strategy of accommodation is, however, deeply problematic. It fails to fully grasp the importance of international law's decentralized institutional form in securing some measure of accountability in international relations. It thus misleads through functional analogy and, in doing so, potentially exacerbates legitimacy deficits. There are enough conceptual weaknesses and blindspots in the legal-theoretical models against which international law is so frequently challenged to show that the perceived problem arises more in theory, than in practice. "I Can Make You Thin" - Review

For almost 3 years now I have been handing this book and 'mind-reprogramming' CD to every patient who comes to me to lose weight, or who is caught up in the mentality of diets, scales, cravings, or overeating.

I am *delighted* that this version of "I Can Make You Thin" is finally available on Amazon.com rather than having to hunt it from the UK site. The long wait is over!

At the risk of making this book seem too simple, here are Paul McKenna's 4 golden rules...
1. When you are hungry, eat.
2. Eat what you want (not what you think you "should".)
3. Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful.
4. When you are full stop.

I've seen other "I Can Make You Thin" reviews that dismiss the 4 rules as just obvious common sense. I'm not sure what common sense they can really mean since the rules make a mockery of the majority of get thin / lose weight approaches around. Rule 2 in particular certainly disagrees with the 'common sense' that I was taught as a medical doctor.

Even if the rules are common sense, McKenna needs to be given great credit for showing people HOW to live these habits. Hopefully you are buying this for the results, not just to have a fun read and a relaxing, new-wavy listen.

Yes, the coverpages are a bit hypey, but the inside is less so. The book is refreshingly thin :), jargon-free, and entertaining.

McKenna's style also involves techniques such as tapping (TFT/EFT), hypnosis and NLP . Hypnosis is what first made Paul famous, and I've seen NLP Practitioners review this and say they knew all of these tricks before. In NLP terms Paul is saying that the Golden Rules are the "model" for being "naturally thin". Just knowing all the geewiz psych techniques won't help if you have the wrong model as I suspect most NLPers do.

More importantly, you don't need any of these techniques to apply the 4 golden rules and lose weight.

Most people can go the book & CD, discover the Aha moments, and get started on transforming their relationship with food and their weight straight away.

There might be a group of people that could eat according to the 4 rules and not be thin, but I agree with what Paul says. For myself, I'm yet to meet such a person.

I have counseled people who thought it didn't work for them, but it turned out they hadn't gotten the rules into their behavior, so here are some extra pointers...

- Just listening to the CD over and over doesn't seem to be enough. The book plays a big part too. Expect to re-read the book at least once. You can succeed without the CD, so if it doesn't suit you, no sweat.

- Don't add more rules. Extra rules almost always conflict with the four golden rules. Must eat breakfast? No. Just eat when you are hungry. Have to eat only fresh food? Check you really want to eat it, and whether you might want to eat anything else a bit more. Etc, etc.

- Having trouble visualizing? Just act 'as if' you are visualizing, or on the CD just leave it to Paul.

- Don't make exercise the focus. Improved fitness will improve your chances of living longer, but unfortunately the best research evidence is that exercise doesn't help much in losing weight. Keep to the four rules, which are all about food and getting back in control.

- If you have a question or a difficulty, the answer is somewhere in the book. The book alone truly is comprehensive (unlike watching YouTube videos or reading this review.) Indeed the updates have covered the two or three remaining gaps I had found before, including the extra information for self-sabotage issues.

In summary, McKenna is not the only person to propose this way of eating, but his is the most accessible version I know about. His is also the most likely to reach out from the page and permanently change your thinking and your behavior, and thereby your weight.

You can buy his measly book just to prove Paul wrong :)

Life changer

Each person is unique, and everyone will respond to this system differently. This is how it is working for me.
I have been using this system for a little over a week now, and my pants are beginning to fit again. I have not even finished reading the book! The CD for me has worked wonders in changing my relationship with food. I have fallen asleep listening to the CD about 75% of the time, and find myself waking up when he is counting down. His voice, overdubs and music seem to do the trick. Following the four principles and coming up with a scale for hunger was very helpful for me as well. I was at a recent birthday party, and I easily passed on all the wonderful junk food that was readily available. My friends see how I am eating now, and are wondering if I am not eating because I am stressed out. :) I just smile and tell them I am not hungry.

Try this method, read the book,listen to the CD, be patient, stick with it and it will work.

Lost 45 pounds in11 months, and still losing...

I initially lost 38 pounds in 7 months. As I've mentioned in other reviews, I am wheelchair dependent. I had tried many weight loss methods with typical results: lose a lot for 6 weeks, plateau, gain weight back. I needed a system that didn't require extra exercise or journaling. I read the book and now I listen to the CD every night. From the beginning weight loss was slow but steady, about a pound a week for 8 months, some weeks a little less. I do feel mildly hungry quite often, but anytime I really get hungry I just eat.

I can't explain why this is working so well, but it's very easy and I'm very happy with the results. I do notice a difference on days when I didn't listen to the CD the night before. The biggest change is, without any hard and fast rules, I stop eating before I'm full. Last week I was in a candy store buying a birthday present. Got the free sample, took a bite, thought it was delicious, wrapped it up and put it in my purse for later. I've never done that before, ever.

I don't know if McKenna's method will work for others, but it's definitely working for me.

p.s. the CD has two parts. The first is a regular self help lecture. The second is the "trance" track. He uses a lot of special audio effects, including overlapping voices, voice fading away in one speaker and getting louder in the other, etc. I don't try to follow it consciously, just relax and let it play.

Updated January 3, 2013: I've now lost 45 pounds in 11 months and still losing. So slow, but it's working. I had no difficulty during the holidays, including large family parties at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, and enjoyed it--I just didn't want as much. I hesitated slightly before putting chocolate on my "wish list" as usual, but then went ahead. (I love chocolate.) I got several nice gift boxes, as usual. And then, not at all as usual--I have only opened one so far, and there are only 6 pieces gone in two weeks. I am very much looking forward to the other gifts, but I also know I'll get to them in time, no rush. I used to eat 3 candy bars a day; now it takes 3 or 4 days to finish one. It's not any kind of planned portion control. I just only eat what I'm truly hungry for.

Since this is the time of year when one tends to be bombarded with ads for weight loss systems, I did want to mention one big difference between this book and most of the other plans. McKenna never promises "you won't be hungry." I do get hungry, several times a day, and that's a good thing. It means I'm not overeating. Now when I get hungry, it doesn't worry me. I just think carefully about just what I'm hungry for before selecting the food. I think that alone has made a big difference for me.

I do have to say that I still find listening to the CD daily essential. So I don't know if the method would work without that. I don't think it would for me. So even if the advice is very similar to that of other books, for me it is the trance aspect that sets this one apart. I will update again in a few months.
