Quinnell = Ludlum + Ambler

Welcome back, Creasy. In the sequel to Quinnell's tour de force _Man On Fire_, no time is wasted in setting the stage for ex-mercenary Creasy's latest project. His wife and baby happen to be on a flight to the States: Pan Am 103.
Creasy creates a project plan and executes it in sequential, ever-escalating fashion: exacting brutal, fitting revenge on the terrorists and organizations who killed his new family.
Quinnell represents the pinnacle of true-to-life espionage and 'wet work'. As this is a pen name, the true identity of AJQ is a mystery to most. Suffice it to say, he knows his business.
As I wrote in the review for _Man On Fire_, there is no better author in this genre than Quinnell. It is tragic that his books are (mostly) out of print in the U.S. It has taken many months to buy his out-of-print and new (via international) books and I've finally assembled the full collection of Creasy and non-Creasy stories.
All of them are five stars, period.

Another sentimental and tour-de-force read!

Amongst the passengers on Pan Am 103, which was blown up in the sky over hte small Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, were the wife and 4-year-old daughter of a man called Creasy: a VETERAN & a MERCENARY. Creasy vows to seek his own vegeance, and to this end he needs the back-up of power and of youth. He therefore enlists a US Senator--whose wife also died on that flight--and ruthlessly trains an 18-year-old orphan into becoming a man in his own image....
As usual, Quinnell used news bylines to develop and evolve it into a wonderful story. THE PERFECT KILL is a modern day version of Charles Brownson's movie, THE MECHANICS, but in more deep carvings. Very profound yet with wordless feelings that we could find in his MAN ON FIRE and SNAPSHOT of the genre. The script is clear-cut and concise, fast paced with no hesitated linger-around or rigidarity. A PERFECT READ, as usual, Mr. Quinnell, whoever you are.

A wonderful long overdue sequel to MAN ON FIRE

Rarely a writer could be so integrate like Quinnell who could put romance, love, loyalty, adventure, professionalism, friendship and heroism into one book and made the sequel on a par with its prequel, but Quinnell always did and always could deliver. I wish many readers could find this unfarely overlooked great writer with simple style but profound sentimentals. Creasy in MAN ON FIRE not only lost his beloved wife and daughter this time, but also created a second-coming youngman of his own, Michael Said, the orphan from Malta, might be worth developing into a great character of his legacy in the future novel?

This remained for over a century the only English translation of the story cycle, influencing an incalculable number of writers, and no other edition offers the complete text supplemented by full textual apparatus.

Absolutely love this book

I would have loved to buy the hard cover book with the big font size. But when comparing costs, this is absolutely worth for the money paid. Totally in love with this book. Love the writing style and it gives the feeling which it should give. This takes me to a wonderful world which I prefer to stay back. Unless you hate reading small size letters, I can recommend you to buy this. Even though this is an Oxford World's classic, its not hard for a kid to understand. Very interesting book. It has a good introduction section and other notes to explain the back ground to this stories and how it evolved. Its good to read for any child or adult who is interested in learning literature. As per my understanding this has all the stories of Arabian Nights. This has roughly 60 stories and covers all nights. You can read these and tell the stories to the kids until they sleep. I can rate this as excellent.

Greatest non-novel fiction of its century

Another reviewer commented on the fact that this is "less true" to the "original text" than a recent translation by a learned scholar.

Arguing over which manuscript of the Arabian Nights is the authoritative one is about as political as arguing over Bible manuscripts. It's also about as pointless. They're all good, though this is probably the most readable translation (devoid of the literal-ness of Haddaway and Burton's flowery language). The question you need to answer is what are you looking for?

If it's literature, especially the complex narrative framing that's enthralled writers for centuries, this is probably your best bet. If you're looking at it from the perspective of Orientalism as a discipline and post-colonial studies, definitely look at the Burton. If you're looking for an honest depiction of the work as an Arab cultural text or just like things a bit more sexed up, look at the Haddawy. Look them over and decide for yourself.

This is the manuscript with the stories most frequently associated with the 1001 Nights, and the most of them. It's more westernized than the recent Haddawy translation, comparatively more orientalized (though not egregiously like Burton's, which I find unreadable) and the longest. It's bowdlerized, yes, compared to the Burton and the Haddawy but it's still a significant text in its own right.

Personally, I would caution against the Haddawy, especially for writers interested in material or casual readers since the "original text" is missing most of the stories found in the Galland like Aladdin and Ali baba and the 40 thieves, the stories most often associated with Arabian Nights. They were mostly inserted much later than the manuscript Haddawy is working from. Just remember, there is not a single definitive version of a text this old. There are several. Each have relative merits, though the Burton doesn't hold up very well to casual reading.

Decide for yourself.

Buyer Beware

The publisher's description of this book is misleading. The translation dates from 1706-1721 but has been typographically modernized (e.g., long "s" that looks like "f" has been replaced). The blather about "textual apparatus" sounds scholarly but amounts to a few pages of notes, an appendix containing plot summaries of the selections represented in this translation, a glossary of foreign terms, and an index. The introduction is plodding, patched together from other introductions, and tendentious.

Example: "For [Scheherazade] ... story-telling is nothing less than a matter of life and death. Again and again in the collection we encounter individuals whose lives depend upon the responses of their listeners to their tales. If, in the frame story which structures the entire body of narratives, for example, Scheherazade fails to persuade the sultan Schahriar to rescind his pledge to execute each of his new wives on the morning following their marriage, she will not only forfeit her own life, but effectively will be Schahriar's accomplice in sentencing an untold number of young women to a similar fate." The heroine's failure would make her an accomplice in murder? I think not. The point of the frame story is that she does indeed succeed in delaying Schahriar's demented vengeance and ultimately cures him of his psychopathy. Whether this is realistic is beside the point: it's a story.

The translation in this edition was extensively bowdlerized, making funny, bawdy, and fairly raw stories suitable for reading by gentlewomen of early 18th century England. This translation of the French Galland translation (1704-1721) from the Arabic has historical interest as the most widely available version of the "Nights" in English throughout the 18th century, but if you are looking for a good, honest translation of these wonderful stories, this is not it. I suggest the translation by Husain Haddawy, which is varied, strange, and wonderful, but not for the squeamish.

Fundamentals of measurement theory are taken through to implementation of practical ground based radiometers and their application to validate satellite data used to generate climate data records. About the Author
Dr. Zibordi received a Laurea in Physics from the University of Modena (Italy) and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Southampton (United Kingdom). He was a researcher at the Italian National Research Council in Modena from 1984 to 1992, where his work focused on quantitative remote sensing for coastal and polar regions. Since 1993 he is with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Ispra (Italy), working on satellite ocean color development and validation activities. His research interests include remote sensing techniques for the determination of atmospheric and marine optical properties, and, methods for in situ optical measurements and for the radiometric calibration of optical instruments. Dr. Zibordi has authored or co-authored over 90 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

Dr. Donlon received a B.Sc. First class (Hon) in 1989 from the University of Lancaster, UK and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Southampton, UK in 1994. He worked at the University of Colorado, USA as an Assistant Research Professor, at the European Commission Joint Research Centre Italy for 5 years in the Institute for Environment and Sustainability and at the Met Office UK for 5 years in the Operational Oceanography division. He was Director of the Group for High Resolution SST (GHRSST) 2000-2011. Since September 2008, Dr. Donlon has worked at the European Space Agency as the Principal Scientist for Oceans and Ice in the Mission Science Division of Earth Observation Programmes Directorate. He is the Mission Scientist for the Copernicus Sentinel-3 Satellite. Dr Donlon has published his research in over 70 journal articles in the scientific literature. His main interests include remote sensing of oceans, development and preparation of new satellite concepts and missions for oceanography, oceanographic application of satellite data, development of satellite climate data records of sea surface temperature, design of reference thermal infrared black body reference radiance sources, design, construction, software development, calibration and deployment of sea-going infrared radiometer systems for the validation of satellite SST data sets.

Dr. Parr received an MS and PhD (1970) from the University of Chicago and was involved in research in synchrotron radiation research and development, spectroscopy, and ion chemistry at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He joined the Optical Technology Division in 1986 and was active in developing new calibration and measurement strategies based upon the high accuracy cryogenic radiometer. This includes redefinition of the U.S. National SI units of the candela and lumen based upon measurements directly traceable to the cryogenic radiometer. Dr. Parr retired as Chief of the Optical Technology Division in 2007 and continues to consult on radiometric matters related to remote sensing in addition to editor work on the Elsevier series, Experimental Methods in the Physical Sciences. Dr. Parr has published extensively on his research and has over 100 articles in the scientific literature.
