Colin Gautrey's latest book, "A Project Manager's Guide to Influence", takes on the politics of project management as a foundational reality, and helps you navigate its pathways to build and grow your influence in a way that will have positive impact on your project and your organization's leadership vision. Through a series of practical chapters discussing the role of influence on your supervisors, peers and team members, the book takes provides an overview of stakeholders that is probably the most realistic you will ever find. You will then participate in a series of practical exercises to think through these relationships and identify how to work within those political constructs.
Favorite chapters:
Chapter 2, featuring the exercise "Reflecting on your reality": This was a chapter that I spent a little time in the morning with, sipping a nice cup of tea, and really thinking about what I knew, what I didn't know, and how I could identify the opportunities and challenges ahead in my project. The Stakeholder Influence process diagram is an excellent bonus.
Chapter 9: Advocates, Critics, Players and Enemies. Very important to understand the landscape you are working within and excellent advice on working with all of these groups to move your project forward. This helped me put the stakeholder list in focus.
Chapter 11: Building High Quality Relationships: projects come and go, but the opportunity to build relationships that will help you beyond your project is very important, given the fluidity of the modern workplace.
All the "Coffee Break" sections: these one page reflections appear throughout the book and provide ways of thinking about common concerns facing project managers, from working with remote team members to dealing with your emotions as a project manager.
As I once heard in a song, "Politics is the art of the possible." This book is for all project managers, and anyone who works in any kind of organization, because politics lives and breathes in every place of human activity. Thinking you can rise above it is pointless. As Colin writes, "Virtually all projects result in a change to the power structures of groups/organisations". John W. Kingdon has taught political science at the University of Michigan since 1965 and is the author of numerous books.

In this brief and accessible book, Kingdon (political science, Univ. of Michigan) tackles several basic, important questions often left unasked by the average American: What makes the American people different from people of other nations, and how and why did we become different? Essentially, the answers lie in what we believe about ourselves and our government. Kingdon argues that the basic components of "American ideology"?individualism and equality?coupled with a deep-seated mistrust of government growing out of the experience of the earliest American immigrants created the conditions from which our government, one of limited powers, was designed. Once started down the path of limited government, Americans rarely looked to government as the solution to societal problems. Hence, Kingdon suggests the center of politics in the United States, even today, is to the right of most of the industrialized nations of Europe. While Kingdon's book presents no new research on this subject, it is a refreshing and engaging review of what constitutes our political culture and its consequences for contemporary public policy.?Thomas J. This book does a great job of examining the odd quirks of this country as it works to rectify public opinion and public policy. John in a very thoughtful writer.

Good facts, but opinions open to debate.

I disagreed with many of the authors opinions in this book, but I will give him credit. He does at least give a fleeting glance at his opponents and dissenters.
As far as I can tell with my limited knowledge,his facts are accurate. While I do not agree with many of his points, I did find the book well laid out organizationally.
He was very clear in his stating of facts and his opinions. He also separated the two very well. He clearly noted when he was stating facts and when he was stating an opinion. I did notice one rather unsubstantiated generalization in the party unity portion of his argument, but I found very few examples of strongly biased generalizations.
The author seems to suggest a rather unrealistic goal of a compromise between the European system of democracy and the American government style. This idea would require too many changes in a society that generally resists change. This a strong book factually, though some of the opinions are open to debate.
I do like his idea of setting out exactly why America is so unusual. This would be a good book for students to read to gain a bit of knowledge of America as compared to European and other industrialized nations. Though I personally did not care for the book because of the opinions expressed, I do believe that it was worthwhile to read if only to pick up the idiosyncracies of the American style of government.

This book was very good

I like that when he talks about his experiences he makes it seem exciting. And I like the seven storm night part, that he tried to take a picture but he didn't, but I still like it.

His mom:

I really like this book. It has vivid descriptions of the life of Warren Faidley, a storm photographer. It talks about how he photographs lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes. It includes many details of his daily life, such as visits to weather centers, navigating unmarked farm roads to chase tornadoes, and even the many oil changes needed for his specially outfitted vehicle, "Shadow Chaser." Along the way, we learn about the science of storms as well. My only criticism is that some of the descriptions of events are a bit confusing, and it would be nice if the photos had captions. Overall a very exciting book combining science, adventure, and biography.

A smaller "Strom Chaser"

This book is a beautiful summery of Faidley's "Storm Chaser" for kids. The photos are simply breadth-taking and incredible. Most kids would be more interested in storm chasing than storms itself, but Faidley will use his wonderful photos to arouse their curiosity about the science behind our violent atmosphere. If the words can't leave them gasping awe, the photographs will.

Deep, lucid, interesting textbook on formal semantics using the lambda calculus.

As an undergraduate student in the Computer Science major at Yale University during the spring semester of 1992 - 93, I used this textbook in Professor Paul Hudak's class "Computer Science 430b: Formal Semantics."

Personally, I enjoyed using this textbook. It went into great detail into the theory of formal semantics of programming languages, using the lambda calculus. Having come from a background in the Scheme programming language, I immediately found the syntax of the lambda calculus familiar, as it had originally been used as the basis for the LISP programming language, of which Scheme was a variant.

Most of the equations and proofs were clear and relatively easy to understand with reasonable effort, although Professor Hudak did suggest more elegant alternatives for some of the equations.

The simply-typed lambda calculus, introduced in Chapter 2, proved a relatively easy-to-understand beginning basis for grasping the concepts of formal semantics. The book ventured on to discuss category theory, fixed-point semantics, untyped lambda calculus, and domain theory, among many other topics. In particular, I found the discussions on the simply-typed lambda calculus, category theory, and domain theory interesting.

This textbook, together with Paul Hudak's crisp and easy-to-understand teaching style, remain as some of my more pleasant memories from the otherwise brutal and grinding Yale computer science curriculum. Together, they are part of the reason that Scheme, with its basis on the lambda calculus, remains one of my favorite programming languages for the study of programming methodologies.
