About the Author

Max Weber (1864-1920) was one of the founders of contemporary social science and arguably the greatest influence on the evolution of sociology--its theory and historical linkages. His work focused on the areas of the history and theology of religion, political systems, and organizational theory and behavior. He studied at the University of Heidelberg followed by the University of Berlin. After completing his advanced studies, he became professor of economics first at Freiburg University and then at the University of Heidelberg.

There is a small problem with the English-language title of this volume, "Ancient Judaism." Weber produced the studies included in the book in the years leading up to the First World War, in the absence of much the material and textual evidence produced by archeology, and under the influence of the "Higher Criticism," which insisted that texts describing the earlier period were all late inventions. Despite this, he managed to produce a first-rate analysis of the social foundations of Biblical Israel. Not "Judaism," the religion of the synagogue, but rather the life of an ancient people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Indeed, the closing chapters, on the post-exilic period and the emergence of Second-Temple Judaism, are the weakest of the book. This is partly because he insisted on applying his theories of the social role of sects to the religion of the whole population of Persian and Hellenistic Judea, instead of treating it as a national religion fracturing into sects under the pressure of foreign occupation. Nor did Weber have time to reconsider his conclusions, or his presuppositions. "Das Antike Judentum" was published as it stood in 1921; the author's death in 1920 having prevented revisions, or the carrrying out of his planned analyses of Psalms and Job, which might have been included (along with related studies of Talmudic Judaism, and early Christianity, and Islam).

Max Weber was one of the founders of modern sociology, and although his reputation has fluctuated over the decades, his ideas and methods remain basic to sociological discourse, and appear frequently in other fields. It is not surprising that Weber's discussions of pre-Exilic Israel and Judah retain their value. Not greatly concerned with the absolute or relative dating of the texts, he studied them for what they revealed about economic conditions and social roles. A great familiarity with other pre-modern societies replaced Semitic philology or Christian theology as his guides. His brief analysis of the Sabbatical Year and the Jubilee as means of maintaining social equilibrium, and with it the population of free peasants to fill the militia, was based on his knowledge of ancient Greece, but has since found some confirmation in the concerns of early Babylonian rulers to prevent the impoverishment of the military class.

Besides its continuing value as a study of the Biblical period, Weber's "Ancient Judaism" is a particularly good example of his sociological method in action. The source material is readily available to the student, if not already familiar. In this it is unlike his fascinating studies of China and India, in which he not only drew on translations and secondary sources, but on materials not likely to be familiar to most readers, and in some cases is rather difficult to obtain. (Nineteenth-century Indology and Sinology not having a large place in most libraries, for example.) It is therefore much easier to pick up what he left out, what he considered significant, and to decide whether his conclusions now seem warranted by the evidence.

Masterful translation of masterful Sufi work

In this book, Nahid Angha masterfully produces an English translation of Abdu'llah Ansari's "The One Hundred Fields" or Sad Maydan, as it is known in Persian. The book includes an introduction with biographical information on Ansari, the 11th century Persian Sufi mystic, theologian, philosopher, and poet, in the context of the Persian literary and spiritual renaissance. In Sad Madyan, Ansari details for the reader the "One Hundred Fields" or stations of the spiritual path that the "wayfarer" experiences on his or her journey towards God. Angha provides extensive footnotes that reveal to the reader Ansari's Quaranic references, note nuances contained within the author's farsi word choice, and indicate where variations exist between the several published versions of the work. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Persian literature and poetry, mystical traditions, and the journey towards the self.

Stations of the Sufi Path is interesting historically, as an English translation of an ancient text, and as a book for the spiritual traveler to use for reflection. Dr. Nahid Angha, as a Sufi Master and one of the foremost translators of Sufi poetry into English, shares the depth of her knowledge and wisdom in this translation of Ansari's One Hundred Fields.

Paul is Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Kentucky, and is currently the Sam Nunn Eminent Professor of Aerospace Systems Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He has written 12 textbooks on electrical engineering subjects, and has published over 200 technical papers, the majority of which are in his primary research area of electromagnetic compatibility of electronic systems. He has received numerous awards for his research and teaching.

It's wrong, all of it.

The problems in the book are wrong, the number of typos found within the text and the problems is beyond disappointing. Nothing about this book indicates that anybody proof read it before publishing it. On several occasions the answers provided by the book for its example and homework problems are blatantly wrong, or the questions asked by the book are fundamentally flawed.

The book helps people to learn the basics of electrical engineering. its not the most impressive book, but it will help college students understand the basics and the explanations of the book and problem are good.

Top points for writing, readability, content, perspective and accuracy.

First off, if you (or someone you love) are suspected of having or have been diagnosed with PMDD, GET. THIS. BOOK. NOW!

Liana is writing with candid, first-hand wisdom. If you are someone with PMDD, you’ll find her experiences dreadfully familiar but completely reassuring. It isn’t just you! If you love someone with PMDD, you’ll recognize a lot of what she writes about but begin to see it through new eyes. You might even begin to understand what you once thought was beyond comprehension…the sudden monthly changes and unrecognizable personality of your loved one.

Now that I’ve expressed my overall sentiment of the value of this book, let me continue with my review…which is actually mixed.

The first thing that appealed to me was Liana’s overall stance about PMDD, managing it by treating the whole person, awareness being key, and that the typical pharmaceutical treatments often cause more harm than good. She echoes my own feelings on these subjects. In fact, we’ve both written some very similar pieces surrounding these issues. We are wholly aligned in those regards. But she makes some excellent points that I hadn’t considered and which have enriched by own understanding of PMDD and why I feel the way I do about these points.

Where I became less attracted was on three counts: 1) her occasional references to Jesus and the Bible (I agree with her that faith is important, but it would have been nice if the book had remained free of suggestion) 2) her repeated affirmation that untreated PMDD will worsen and result in long-term post-menopausal depression (while research may have shown that this is possible, I think her insistence of it is a little presumptuous and an unnecessary fright for women in their later years only now discovering the problem), and 3) some inconsistency regarding incidents when PMDD may actually be something else (for example, Liana writes that her own symptoms occur twice during her cycle which would lead one to believe she may experience more than 7-10 days of symptoms, yet she later says that anyone experiencing more than 7-10 days of symptoms definitely has other issues. And in another instance, she writes that some women get symptomatic during ovulation right through to their periods while others experience only one good week a month, yet here she makes no mention of “other factors” at that moment. For me, this just left me confused).

The book more than makes up for these sticky points with tons of excellent information and Liana’s hard-won personal insights. She is amazingly and beautifully open about so much; it will resonate so deeply with women battling this nightmarish condition. And such forthrightness will do wonders for anyone struggling with shame around PMDD and the resulting craziness. She’s really got her two feet on the ground too as she’s obviously done her homework and doesn’t try to sweeten the reality of PMDD with platitudes or false promises. She’s taking the realistic approach.

Mental, physical, emotional and spiritual avenues are touched upon with a plethora of practical, proactive advice. Though she isn’t a medical professional, Liana’s lived PMDD and no doubt has a far deeper understanding of it than could have been presented by any doctor researching and drawing conclusions based on a small group of women. But this is by no means a book solely based on one woman’s experience. Throughout the book are chapters dedicated to reader comments which in themselves are quite illustrative and powerful, giving credence to the difficulties unique to PMDD and their impact on the lives of those living with it.

With top points for writing, readability, content, perspective and accuracy, I have to reiterate what a fabulous book this is. It is common for me when reading an exquisite novel, as I reach the last few pages having enjoyed it so thoroughly, to be left grieving the loss of the company of its characters. Liana has written a non-fiction book that left me with the same feeling.

I have had PMDD for 10 years and desperately wanted to understand it and be able to explain it to the people I was in relationships with so they would understand. I can't wait for my fiancé to read this! It has a lot of good tips and explains PMDD in a way that makes it understandable to someone who doesn't have it. Loved this book!

Grade 4-6?Hannah is lonely after her best friend moves away from their Grand View, NY, neighborhood. Between September 1937 and July 1938, the girl writes volumes of letters to her new pen pal, Edward; her grandparents; Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt; and White House secretary Margaret "Missy" Lehand. Her correspondence to and from these individuals is the content of this introspective, leisurely book. The technique reveals Hannah's character nicely. Particularly effective is the description of her ultimate comedown?she misspells "restaurateur" in class and reports to Edward that she had to write the word 10 times. Edward's educational progress through Hannah's long-distance "tips" strains credibility, but her love-hate relationship with cloying Aunt Becky adds a note of humor. Historical texture is effectively woven into the book, with the difficulty of adults finding and keeping work a recurrent theme. Though the author explains in a closing note that the letters are fictional, Hannah's improbable correspondence with the Roosevelts adds dimension to historical characters and her voice is consistently clear and childlike. Spanning the months from the fall of 1937 to the summer of 1938, Hannah's correspondence includes letters to and from her Kansas pen pal Edward, her friend Aggie (who never responds to Hannah's countless letters), President Roosevelt (who always responds and sometimes sends stamps for her postage collection), Eleanor Roosevelt, Aunt Becky, Grandma, and an itinerant artist working for the WPA in Oregon. Not only are the letters lively and readable, they also offer a vivid picture of the period from Hannah's point of view. Though some will find the presidential correspondence unlikely, those who accept the premise will see it offers a broader view of Hannah's America. A fine choice for classrooms studying the 1930s, and for fans of the other Hannah books, a rewarding series of letters from an old friend. Carolyn Phelan

Enjoyable reading with one exception.

I enjoyed reading this book. I like the way the author allowed the reader to learn about Hannah through letters she writes and receives. The only thing that bothered me about the book was the use of S.O.B. close to the end of the story. I am a teacher and was reading this book because it is on the Bluebonnet Reading List for Texas. Unfortunately I know that we (the people at my school) will hear it from parents because of the use of this abbreviation. The book is wonderfully written, but I don't really understand the need for this type of language. While most kids know what S.O.B. stands for, I personally don't want to have to explain it to my own children or my students.

rediscovering the personal letter in the age of email

This is a stand-alone book in the Hannah series -- a charming book about a Depression-era preteen and her adventures in letter-writing. The book is composed of wonderful letters written to and from Hannah. In my world of no coincidences, I found and read this book during February -- which is the time of an online project that encourages one to mail something through the post on every day it runs (and to answer everyone who writes to you during that time) -- a commitment of 24 items in 2016. It's called the Month of Letters challenge. I was inspired by the delightful story of Hannah and her pen pals to take the challenge this year.

Good Read

I found that this book was a very fun, sweet read. It's about a young girl named Hannah whose best friend moves away so she must find a penn pal. Eventually she has an entire (lengthy) list of pen pals. Everyone from her next-door neighbor to the secretary of FDR & FDR himself (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) This book is very entertaining and I enjoyed the correspondance between Hannah and all her friends. The book has a good portrayal of what life was like back in the 30's and the author does a wonderful job telling the sotry through the mindset of a nine to ten year old. This book is very fun and enjoyable. Hannah is a very spunky, sweet character and I especially enjoyed her letters with descriptions of people and places. There were a few things that were dissapointing in the book such as the fact that Hannah's old best friend never writes back to her but the overall story is much too fun and happy to dwell on those things. Overall this is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it!

Don't start a guitar without it

I have been a professional woodworker for over 30 years, I specialize in finish carpentry and stairs. I have a good knowledge of wood species, tools, jointery and woodworking techniques. Having said all that I am very glad I purchased this book before I began making my first guitars. Hiscock covers everything from how to design a well balanced, good sounding, strong guitar, all the way through finishing techniques and guitar setup. The author also covers the three methods of attaching neck to body, how to calculate neck angle, placement of fingerboard, bridge and pickups. The pictures and illustrations are high quality and easy to understand. I am constantly referring back to this book as I am working on my guitars. My only knock is the section explaining what tools one would need to build a guitar. To build a guitar with just the tools shown would require a great deal of skill and time. To make the job a whole lot easier a good quality table saw, jointer, routers, surface planer and spindle sander would be good to have access to. As a whole I would highly reccommend the book.

Terrific book for inspiration and practical advice

This book has been my essential reference while building my first solid body electric guitar. Melvyn has written a very comprehensive and practical guide to all stages of construction from the basics of designing your own instrument through to applying the finishing touches.
I like the way Melvyn discusses a variety of approaches for each task in design and building. You are encouraged to understand and think creatively rather than follow a strict plan. If that sounds a bit fuzzy, and the lack of detailed plans puts you off (there are none in this book) I can try to reassure that all you need is here. Despite having next to no woodworking experience myself I'm now most of the way through my first instrument and already planning the next couple. It also gave me the confidence to front up to a local luthiery (Gilet Guitars in Sydney, Australia), choose my materials and ask some reasonably intelligent questions.
One really nice aspect of the book is that Melvyn shares anecdotes about his own mistakes over the years so that you can anticipate problems - or at least not feel too bad when you make a few mistakes of your own along the way.
So, in summary - buy this book and be inspired.

Outstanding

If we waited for a book to be perfect, they would never be finished. This particular book, however, is as close in its genre as could be found. It covers everything you need to know, from how to determine the spacing of frets, to how to wire your electronics, to how to install truss rods. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. Prior to reading it, I was frankly just scared of working on my own guitar. Although I don't have immediate plans to build my own, this book has given me the confidence to make modifications to my current one and to realize that many of the people who have worked on my guitar knew far less about what they were doing than I now know.
The book does assume that you have some basic skills in woodworking and electronics; it would be unreasonable to expect the author to teach you this also. Yet, the author does provide valuable and appreciated tips and pointers in these areas regardless. He pretty much covers it all. Over and over again I found myself thinking "thank you!" to the author for the information - buy this book, you won't regret it.
