About the Author

Robert Stine holds a PhD from Princeton University. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1983, during which time he has regularly taught business statistics. During his tenure, Bob has received a variety of teaching awards. Bob also actively consults for industry. His clients include the pharmaceutical firms Merck and Pfizer, and he regularly works with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on models for retail credit risk. This collaboration has produced three well-received conferences held at Wharton. His areas of research include computer software, time series analysis and forecasting, and general problems related to model identification and selection. Bob has published numerous articles in research journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, and The Annals of Statistics. He was recently awarded the 2011 Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award for outstanding teaching quality at the Wharton School.

Dean Foster holds a PhD from the University of Maryland. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1992 and previously taught at the University of Chicago. Dean teaches courses in introductory business statistics, probability and Markov chains, statistical computing, and advanced statistics for managers. Dean’s research areas are statistical inference for stochastic processes, game theory, machine learning, and variable selection. He is published in a wide variety of journals, including The Annals of Statistics, Operations Research, Games and Economic Behaviour, Journal of Theoretical Population Biology, and Econometrica.

Bob Stine and Dean Foster have co-authored two casebooks: Basic Business Statistics (Springer-Verlag) and Business Analysis Using Regression (Springer-Verlag). These casebooks offer a collection of data analysis examples that motivate and illustrate key ideas of statistics, ranging from standard error to regression diagnostics and time series analysis. They also have collaborated on a number of research articles.

Fine text, but lack of CD datasets makes some exercises impossible

Pros: The text itself does an excellent job at presenting basic concepts and examples, and relating the material to realistic scenarios as one encounters in the business world (quality control, political polling, etc.) The starting point of the text is appropriate for those with no prior knowledge of statistics or, perhaps, data presentation. Thus, the first chapters aren't exactly page turners. Nonetheless, I find Stine's later chapters (14/30 onwards) provide a good shelf companion for those occasionally needing to refresh their knowledge of various tests and inference methods.

Cons: My main issue with this *Kindle edition* comes from the fact that a relatively large number of problems and exercises at the end of chapters call for datasets on a CD which is not supplied with this digital version. Sadly, the publisher's website is of little help here. If only there existed some sort of technology that would allow people to download files remotely...

The book is an exact copy of the original textbook, just black and white and without page numbers that match the original textbook. But the answers to the questions at the end of every chapter makes up for it!

Really bad statistics textbook

First off, I have no clue why my professor actually chose to use this textbook; you would think that a very knowledgeable statistics professor would know better than to use such a verbose, pointless, and confusing textbook. The textbook is poor at explaining the concepts of statistics. Statistics as a whole is not that confusing, but this textbook makes your head spin. After a quarter of confusion, I am opting to purchase a better textbook. If you are choosing this textbook to learn about statistics, think again. There are other books out there for you!

Short book with a ton of info.

Author gives a lot of info on the workings of and proper set up of a banjo. Very obvious he has spent a lot of time playing and studying the workings of a banjo. As a builder and repairman I have seen a lot of banjos but I found this book cheap at the price for the info found in it.

Nechville has created many original designs for the banjo, but his tuning/setup advice is best applied to his banjos. I wish the author put more discussion on the banjos which most of us have and less self promotion.

Many tests, "the answer key's" are excellent!

I used Delata's Advanced Skill for TOEFL ibt first, and then use this one.
This book has many tests which are excellent and enough for the TOEFL bit.
It is better to use Advanced Skill first.
Before I use this book, I used Princeton's, Barron's and Mastering skills'.
However, I could not choose the right answer because I always consider about two out of four answers,
and I couldn't understand why it becomes this one answer when I used the other books.
Surprisingly, after I use Delta's, I could completely understand it.
"The Answer Key" of these books are precise and well explained.
I strongly recommend this to all non-native English speakers.
After I have done these two books, I can clear more than 100 scores!
I appreciate the author of these books very much.

Very Disappointing !!

Very Disappointing !!
I bought this used book thinking that there would be minor writings but the whole book has been marked .The answers have been checked.I was stilll Ok with that.But the most annoying thing was MISSING ANSWER KEY PAGES.They have been completely torn out from the book.So here i am ,delayed with my preparation for the TOEFL test !I am surely returning the book,what good is it without answers.

This book grabbed me by the collar and would not let me go!

The first day I bought this book, I sat on my desk and told myself I'd just read a chapter before I go to bed. That was 9pm. No matter how hard I tried, I could not put the book down. I found myself teary eyed, reading the ending, at 5am the next morning. Intending to read just the first few pages, I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting (with one bathroom break!).
Everytime Angel would run away from Michael's love, I would say, "you stupid, ungrateful woman!" But as I was reading, God reminded me of all the times when I myself would backslide from my faith, thinking that I could make it on my own without Him - and of how unconditional His love is (like Michael's) when I come to my senses and ask for His forgiveness. After I finished the novel, I couldn't help but thank God for His forgiving, faithful, redeeming love.
I definitely recommend this book. But don't read it like I did - Don't read it in one sitting until 5am when you need to be at work at 7am.!!

A moving picture of the unshakeable love of God

What a joy to be able to share my thoughts about this book with whomever may read this. This is the first book Francine Rivers wrote after coming into her relationship with Christ. Because of that, it has a rawness and a fresh fascination with the incredible love of God. The characters are real and believable, especially Angel, whose life experiences have left her bitter and angry, certain that there is no hope for redemption or love. The story that unfolds is so much more than the "sappy" romance-novel cover depicts (I wish the publisher would redesign it). Even for me, a Christian for 15 years, it was deeply moving and humbling to read of how unshakeable God's love is, and also His discipline. I have reccomended this book to so many people, all of whom have had similar responses to mine, and I would suggest it as a way to show God's amazing love to anyone you may know who doesn't know Him. Praise God for servants who are gifted in such unique ways as Mrs. Rivers - may she continue to glorify Him with her stories!

At least 10 starts and should be required reading in schools

I have read very widely, and rarely if ever, has a fiction book held my attention and deep emotions as this book did. Francine Rivers shows the life of children sold into prostitution and the traps they seem to stay in forever. She shows what real married love looks like and the contrasts between good and bad, sweet and bitter, happiness and sadness, truth and lies, all are a major part of this very, very excellent Christian fiction book! It should be required reading in all high schools, private or public and I will recommend this books to all the homeschooling groups I can find. Congratulations Francine, you have done to my heart, mind and emotions what few if any authors have managed to do!
