Great text

It is wonderful to see this great book on undergraduate complex analysis back in print at even a more affordable price. I've used it in in one of my junior level courses and been totally satisfied with it. I will use a part of it again in a continuation course.
What is nice about this book is that it is a textbook, and not a cookbook nor a book that tries to include everything and fails at all of them. This book never lists too many results; instead it aims at the understanding of the subject matter. Its treatment of Cauchy's theorem clearly exposes the fact that different points of view (derivatives, series, integrals) in the complex plane lead to the same object, analytic functions. The sections on geometric and applied topics, such as linear fractional transformations and fluid mechanics, are a delight to read.
The book assumes nothing other than calculus (Green's theorem) as background. Topological concepts are kept at a reasonable level and some are introduced later when necessary so as not to hinder the development of its main topic. Some short side issues are discussed in tiny sections within the exercises. There are also plenty of regular exercises ranging from elementary calculations to rigorous proofs. This book also contains an appendix that I love on the zeros of polynomials, including the cubic and the quartic.
What attracted me most in this book is that one can read it straight through. There are no secondary undeveloped paths, sections to omit, unnecessary details, or long list of formulas. I recomend it for any course or self-study at the introductory level complex analysis.

Complex Variables by Francis Flanigan is much better

This book does a very poor job of explaining both proofs and examples. Many steps are skipped or neglected leaving the reader confused until, after much thought, the step is understood (and it is many times a non-obvious step in logic). I would not recommend this book.

Book Little More than Reference - No Motivation

This is a very strange book - more like a reference book than a textbook that you can use to learn complex analysis for the first time.

The problem with the book is that it offers very little in the way of explanation or motivation for any of the concepts it introduces. It mostly follows the format of: 1) definition, 2) motivation-less symbol pushing proof, 3) several computational examples. Not enlightening. If you're interested in the applications, this book will motivate none of the concepts, so you'll wonder why complex analysis matters at all. For example, there is a section about the Fourier transform - an extremely useful concept; however what the Fourier transform can be used for is relegated to a scanty paragraph at the very beginning of the chapter, and it even fails to mention how it can be used to decompose signals into its component frequencies!! If you're interested in the mathematics behind it, you'll probably be frustrated for the same reason - no motivation anywhere in the book.

Its worth mentioning that almost everyone in my class did not like this book, even the instructor thought it was a terrible book! I think the positive reviews here may be from professors how already know the meaning behind the material, so the fact that this is just a reference book that does not really explain the significance of anything is lost on them.

The Best sales book for cold call telemarketing I've read by far!

I'm a senior who is disabled and needs to work from home. I've had modest success as a door-to-door solar salesman, and I've experienced considerable misery trying to sell on the phone. I love the company and the product I sell for now but I've been miserable at it. From what I can tell, the author, Elayne Nusbaum, has had several sales jobs but only two career jobs: secretary and telemarketing. I've read many "how-to" books, and indeed, I have a considerable library of sales books for reference--most of which are disappointing. Elayne's book, however, I could not put down, and I stuck to it over the course of two days and finished the book, recording the nuggets of sales wisdom in my digital notebook. What struck me about her book is the nuggets of closing questions that were key to her sales success, discussions on the common mental battles that telemarketers have to struggle with, how to overcome them, and the tips on how to be exceptional. She discusses the fear, doubt, and loathing that all phone sales people deal with, and how to overcome the mental drudgery. There is a tangible positive force that can be picked up by reading this book! This is the book that will propel me out of the doldrums and towards my goals by reshaping my attitudes and outlook. I thank Elayne for sharing her wisdom and her experience with me in her book.

Meghan Genge's book is one of those rare finds that gathers the tenderest pieces of hope and wondering and brings them into the light where possibility is more than just a nice thought but a deep medicine. In the metaphors and the characters I have found some deeply moving ideas that have woken me up and helped me to lift into new ways of being in the world. I am not often moved to write reviews but I feel like tapping women in bookstores on the shoulder and telling them about this (in a non creepy way!) If you are looking for a book to shake you up lovingly then this might be it. I am buying copies for my friends and can't wait to talk to them about it.

Every woman should be the heroine of their own story

I was intrigued at the opportunity to read this given the introduction into the book and not fully knowing what to expect. I had an idea that it would contain some metaphysical elements but I didn't expect the story to expand as it did. I was hooked on Melissa's character and wished to know more. In many cases I felt that it was like the Matrix meets woman determined to be "awake" in a sleeping world. This book is the perfect read for anyone trying to find themselves on a path that seems to be all tangled. The imagery is so vivid I felt that I was along the ride for visual meditations while I was reading. Recommend highly ...

I bought this book (Kindle version) on Friday morning upon hearing about it via a friend on Facebook. I was immediately intrigued because it reminded me, in some ways, of books like the Celestine Prophecy (and series) + The Alchemist. My intention was to only start on the book that morning because I had so much already planned for the day. Several hours later I looked up to realize that everything else had needed to wait, and in fact... I'd gone ahead and finished the book. It was worth it. There were times when, as I was reading, I thought "Well here's what this means, and here's where this is headed, I can see it coming a mile away!"... but I actually think that was the point. I think the author wanted to make sure that her points were received. They were for me. So much so, in fact, that I've decided to go ahead and launch a couple of offers that I'd been putting off due to fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of being judged, fear that I wasn't ready. No more. Not only that, I'm finally feeling ready to heal some issues I have had around not feeling my feelings... about stuffing them down vs feeling them... about stuffing myself with food vs allowing myself what my soul really wants.

All this to say:

If you've seen it all and done it all and are still unhappy with your life... skip it. You're not ready.

if you're ready to see yourself, if you're ready for change (and not just platitudes), if you're ready to be open & accepting.... buy this book + read this book + start taking action = the change you'd like in your life.

Concise and full of insights in today's volatile market.

The most common advice given to both experienced and new investors is to "seek value." Here, at last is a book that tells how to do this.Extremely thorough and well organized, "How to be a Value Investor" is noteworthy for its clarity. Readers are taken on an interesting tour which defines value investing, tells how to seek values, gives pointers on fundamentals of balance sheets and income statements, and tackles the difficult question "when to sell." Many examples are given to reinforce the text. The historical perspective also is useful. I found most helpful the section on how the experts seek bargains. There is also information on online investing and a list of websites for value investors.The book is exceptionally timely now, when stock indices are at lofty levels and the challenge to select the right investments never has been greater.Concise and full of insights on succeeding in today¹s volatile markets, this should be indispensable reading for investors trying to improve portfolio performance. There are few volumes on this subject that could be called "page turners," but from my experience, the author hit a home run in this regard.

Disappointing

The book is OK on general principles-Don't time the market; Study companies; Diversify; Develop your own investment plan, Etc. But I bought the book for specifics of value investing-how to read and evaluate annual reports and financial statements. I was expecting chapters 3 and 4 to be the most helpful of the book. Unfortunately I did not find that to be the case-information on how to evaluate annual reports and financial statements could have been more detailed and complete and there are confusions/errors about some of the key evaluative tools.
Current Ratio: Pages 43 and 53 says a Current Ratio of 2 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 2 OR MORE! Actually I think it is 2 or more-because there should be no more than $1 of current liabilities for every $2 of current assets.
Quick Ratio: Pages 43 and 54 say a Quick Ratio of 1 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 1 OR MORE (Appendix A says 1 to 10). Actually I think it is 1 or more-because a company should be able to cover all its current liabilities with current assets less inventory.
Financial formulas can be complicated and there may be no one clear-cut answer for all situations. If so, a discussion should have been included to help readers apply these tools.
Gross Margin: Page 63 shows Walgreen to have a Gross Margin of 94%. It is not clear how a gross profit of 12,655,000 was arrived at-the closest thing I see is a total of costs and deductions on page 59 which is listed on the 10K as "net revenues". While this is most likely a minor glitch, it should have been caught by the author or editor.
Two other criticisms. First, the use of the charts by Bigcharts.com. What do they mean and how should I use them? If charts are included in a text, they should be clearly labeled and there should be an explanation of how to use them.
Second, choice of material on which to base the book. The author based some of the book on interviews (most by telephone) with 5 value investors. Why/how were these interviewees chosen? I think journalists who include interviews should explain the justification for their choice of interviewees. This really should also apply to the books chosen as references-and articles quoted.
