Formerly an enlisted "grunt," Hodgins became a Marine Corps commissioned officer in 1969. He was then charged with leading an infantry platoon as part of a mission to help cover the withdrawal of the 1st Marine Division from I Corps in the northern portion of South Vietnam. Even for trained warriors, it was a treacherous job, albeit one that, as Hodgins suggests, provided ample opportunity for a young man to learn much about himself. In a promising prologue filled with clearheaded and impassioned prose, Hodgins proclaims his pride in having served in Vietnam and offers a summation of the narrative to come. His is not a war story, he writes: "It is not even about Vietnam, although the events recounted occurred there." What follows, though, is at odds with this introduction, in both style and content. For this memoir is very much a war story, replete with detailed recountings of Marine life and missions as experienced by a warrior who, despite the title, shows no sign of having been "reluctant." The combat episodes are related with suspense and, at times, startling honesty. In one instance, a gung-ho Hodgins is in charge of a patrol that has captured some Vietnamese prisoners. As the rest of the team departs, he is left alone with a wounded captive. "He smiled up at me, the cigarette dangling from his lip," Hodgins writes. "I smiled back, and pulled the trigger." Moments later, the young lieutenant coolly rolls the corpse atop a grenade and pulls the safety pin. This and Hodgins's other close-up war stories will appeal to action-adventure buffs, but those looking for a larger perspective will have to look elsewhere. Photos.

YA. The account of one lieutenant's tour of duty in Vietnam during the waning days of American involvement in the war. Hodgins does not attempt to provide any insights into why America was involved but only to tell what life was like for the common soldier operating in the jungles and rice paddies of Southeast Asia. Throughout, the author successfully conveys his pride in his men and what they accomplished. One of the great values of the book is its hidden lessons on leadership?especially on how to motivate people to do their best under adverse conditions. Best day-to-day account of a year in VietNam

Small unit leadership at its best. A compelling tale of the physical, mental, and moral challenges faced by a new `butter bar'. Forget the blood and guts. It's about map reading, fire control, long `walks in the sun' , elephant grass, insect bites, fatigue, surmounting the stigma of being the `FNG', and displaying leadership rather than demanding it. An excellent case study for junior officers and NCO's. An overlooked gem by a real pro.

The kind of book that demands to be read more than once.

In his preface, Michael C. Hodgins hits the target when he identifies the motivating factor of 60s-era draft dodgers such as our illustrious president: convenient and self-serving anti-war sentiment. He then leads the reader into his own microcosm of the war in which he led a group of marines on several hair-raising missions into enemy-held territory. The characters come alive: I can still see them crawling through elephant grass and hacking their way through bamboo. I can see their faces and understand their enthusiasm, misgivings, and hopes. Hodgins is by no means the gung-ho grunt of John Wayne movie lore, but a man who was called upon to do his duty and who did it. How Hodgins interacts with the members of his team is fascinating. His keen psychological insights into his men's states of mind intrigued me as much as Hodgins' own doubts and fears, signaled in the text by the recurring thought, "What now Lieutenant?" So well-written, and so laden with meaning on so many different levels, this book could be used as a text in history, literature, or psychology classes. I will definitely be reading this one again.

The authors accounting of himself as an officer of elit Marines is as serious and straight-forward as the missions they undertook in Viet-nam. Michael Hodgins skillfully, without the usual shoot em up bang bang of war novels, creates an accurate and exciting account of his time with 1st Recon. We are privy as readers to an inside look at preparations,logistics and worry not ever seen when looking at a small group of camoflaged men clinging to a ladder below a helicopter.
This novel will remain always an historical account of the Marine Corps involvement in Vietnam during its dangerous disengagement in 1970. Well done Michael Hodgens, I hope you will writr more.

You can take this book to the bank!

If your seeking to get into the concert promotion business who should you learn from, someone who has been there and done it or someone who's a good writer.

Hal Davidson is the real deal, he's an active Festival Consultant and Promoter working in the business. He promoted Stompin 76 still remembered as the Woodstock of Bluegrass back in 1976 and he was 21 years old at the time. He has without a doubt the best book on Concert Promotion out there take my word for it. So if you're in the concert business get this book.

Reads like a conversation.

Well the book arrived with the CDR of some XLS and WRD docs.
It's a great read, written with passion. It's almost a confession at times.
Hal know this business and he shares his experince in ways that a layman can understand.
The "book" is clearly self published, it's actually a brick of A4 with a binder pobably made at home by the man himself.
Respect that!
Although there are overlaps the book is specifically written for the N.American market.

However I bought several books and this by far was the best.

I cannot believe all the information packed into this book! Now I am ready to take on the world of concert promoting. The forms and CD are a great bonus! The author gives us EVERYTHING we need to know to take on the art of organizing a profitable and enjoyable event. I love that he has the experience and knowledge, and that he is willing to share it with us. You will not be sorry investing in this manual. This is "THE" building block to success.

About the Author
Gerard Whelan was born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, and has lived and worked in several European countries. After some time living in Dublin, he has returned to live in his native Wexford. He is the author of many books for children and a multiple award-winner. His first novel, The Guns of Easter, won the Eilis Dillon Memorial Award for first-time writers. Dream Invader later won the Bisto Book of the Year Award. He has also been shortlisted for the Reading Association of Ireland awards. Gerard is also the author of A Winter of Spies and Out of Nowhere.

Brilliant Irish historical novel

This is an adventure story located in the turmoil of Dublin during the 1916 rebellion. As well as being a gripping adventure, it's a great introduction to modern Irish history.
I've recommended it to older friends as well as younger ones and most of them have read it at one sitting.
The hero of the novel spends Easter week dodging the firefights and explosions which are racking Irelands capital.
Through his travels the book introduces us to a varied cast of characters on both sides of the Irish struggle. As well as the British soldiers there are the various Irish groups that came together to oppose them: the working men of the Citizens army, the poets and writers of the Irish volunteers and the ordinary citizens of Dublin.
The young boys life is often in danger, but through his eyes we are privileged to see the sacrifice and determination which is bringing Ireland it's freedom.
While the hero of the novel is dodging the raking fire of machine guns and the heavy thud of Mauser bullets we're given a fascinating picture of Dublin and it's inhabitants.
One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was it's attention to detail and it's great period accuracy. But after reading it I also understood more fully the political events that are happening in Ireland now.

Very exciting and a mixture of sad and hopeful

I read this book after Gerard Whelan came to our school and explained why he wrote it. He said that a lot of the problems in Ireland today are caused by people getting upset about what they think happened in history and he wanted to find out what really happened. This is a really exciting story about children's adventures during the Easter Rising and at the end you realise it isn't about baddies and goodies but about real mixed up people. I am 13 and I think anyone who enjoys adventure stories would enjoy this one.

Knowledge Is Money

This detailed text expounds on the concepts and theories that the practice of which are important to investors and other corporate business minded people. The degree of information related requires background knowledge and some experience with advanced terminology. I highly recommend this book for those well versed in business and who are looking for the extra edge information can provide. I chose this text as a capstone to my personal learning prior to going for my Masters degree. I was impressed and would not have chosen a different work.
