About the Author
Born in 1899, Nevil Shute worked as an engineer before founding his own aircraft company in 1931. During the Second World War he served in the navy, doing secret work for the admiralty and finding time to write several novels. He made his home in Australia, remaining there with his family until his death in 1960.

A intimate snapshot of UK aviation during the interwar period.

This is a fine companion volume to the book "Airspeed Aircraft" by H A Taylor. There is also a great description of the R100/R101 debacle written at time when there was still some sensitivity about the program.
One other aspect was the number of famous UK aviation personalities and their roles interwoven throughout the book provides a contemporary account that will not be necessarily seen in other published accounts of the people or their companies. A good example would be the story of Alan Cobham.
Highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in UK aviation during the interwar period.

I'll cherish this book always.

As a veteran airframe stress engineer, I wish engineering as Neville Shute describes, was still that way. Sadly it is not. The fun has been removed. The excitement of ground breaking discovery no longer exists.
This great book takes the reader back to another time, a better time. This is one of my all-time favorites, worthy of more than one read.

Observations of Shute Norway

I read all of Nevil Shute's books, except this autobiography, at a much earlier time. I've periodically searched for this book for the last twenty years, and now I'm so glad to have read it. It helps to explain why I enjoyed the man's novels so much.
I was aware that Mr. Shute worked in aeronautical engineering, but had no idea he played such an important role in the industry. I had pictured his early engineering work much like his character in "No Highway in the Sky", a task oriented almost 'nerd-like' man with no interest beyond the laboratory. In an age when people seem to do all possible to elevate their public persona it is refreshing to look at a man who possessed humility.
I realize now how Mr. Shute could develop such wonderful characters in his novels, people with a full range of foibles but also the quiet courage that perserveres through struggles. He had his own life and his own dignity to build upon.
