The Glass Cage: How Our Computers Are Changing Us, by Nicholas Carr

At once a celebration of technology and a warning about its misuse, The Glass Cage will change the way you think about the tools you use every day.

In The Glass Cage, best-selling author Nicholas Carr digs behind the headlines about factory robots and self-driving cars, wearable computers and digitized medicine, as he explores the hidden costs of granting software dominion over our work and our leisure. Even as they bring ease to our lives, these programs are stealing something essential from us.

Drawing on psychological and neurological studies that underscore how tightly people’s happiness and satisfaction are tied to performing hard work in the real world, Carr reveals something we already suspect: shifting our attention to computer screens can leave us disengaged and discontented.

From nineteenth-century textile mills to the cockpits of modern jets, from the frozen hunting grounds of Inuit tribes to the sterile landscapes of GPS maps, The Glass Cage explores the impact of automation from a deeply human perspective, examining the personal as well as the economic consequences of our growing dependence on computers.

With a characteristic blend of history and philosophy, poetry and science, Carr takes us on a journey from the work and early theory of Adam Smith and Alfred North Whitehead to the latest research into human attention, memory, and happiness, culminating in a moving meditation on how we can use technology to expand the human experience.

Review
“Nicholas Carr is among the most lucid, thoughtful, and necessary thinkers alive. He’s also terrific company. The Glass Cage should be required reading for everyone with a phone.” (Jonathan Safran Foer)

“Nick Carr is the rare thinker who understands that technological progress is both essential and worrying. The Glass Cage is a call for technology that complements our human capabilities, rather than replacing them.” (Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody and Cognitive Surplus)

“Carr's prose is elegant, and he has an exceptional command of the facts. He serves a varied menu of the ways that technology has failed us, and in every instance he is not only persuasive but undoubtedly right.” (Daniel Levitin - Wall Street Journal)

“[A] deeply informed reflection on computer automation.” (G. Pascal Zachary - San Francisco Chronicle)

“Smart, insightful…paint[s] a portrait of a world readily handing itself over to intelligent devices.” (Jacob Axelrad - Christian Science Monitor)

“Brings a much-needed humanistic perspective to the wider issues of automation.” (Richard Waters - Financial Times)

“One of Carr's great strengths as a critic is the measured calm of his approach to his material―a rare thing in debates over technology…Carr excels at exploring these gray areas and illuminating for readers the intangible things we are losing by automating our lives.” (Christine Rosen - Democracy)

“There have been few cautionary voices like Nicholas Carr’s urging us to take stock, especially, of the effects of automation on our very humanness―what makes us who we are as individuals―and on our humanity―what makes us who we are in aggregate.” (Sue Halpern - New York Review of Books)

The Road Less Traveled
By Chris Ziesler
My first question on seeing this book was, is it going to be as successful and thought-provoking as Carr's previous book The Shallows? The answer is an unequivocal, "yes!"

If you've not read The Shallows I recommend that you consider reading it first because many of the thoughts and ideas from it are continued, developed and extended in The Glass Cage. It's not a necessary prerequisite but it would enhance your appreciation of Carr's arguments.

Carr's central thesis can be summed up in a quote often attributed to Marshall McLuhan, "we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us."

Carr's point, which he develops with many intriguing examples ranging from airline pilots, through doctors, photographers, architects, and even to farmers, is that this Faustian pact with technology comes at a cost. The cost, in Carr's view, is a loss of direct, experiential, formative contact with our work. The consequences of this slow loss of familiarity and connection with our work are subtle, insidious and will only increase while we follow this technocentric approach to automation.

Carr is excellent at making his case. Most of his examples are familiar and those that less so, such as the automation of legal and medical opinions are interesting in that they affect us all.

I felt that where Carr was less strong was in proposing solutions to the problems he raises. He works hard at explaining an alternative vision calling on the poetry of Robert Frost's as a springboard to a more humanistic approach to developing tools, but it is hard work selling an alternative to the easy, convenient future that so many of us seem to crave.

Ultimately it may be that Carr's biggest contribution will not be to single-handedly derail the future that Google, Apple, and Amazon wish to sell us, an exceedingly unlikely outcome, but to at least make us aware that there is a choice that we are making when we choose the frictionless path to the future, and that we should carefully consider that choice before we make it.

Outsourcing our own humanity
By William Timothy Lukeman
In this thoughtful follow-up to "The Shallows" Nicholas Carr explores precisely what we lose when we turn over more & more of our human skills to our devices. For many people, especially younger ones born into the digital age & never knowing anything else, there's no reason to learn a vast array of knowledge & incorporate it into life, since you can simply Google it. Such people believe that the device is always better & smarter than a mere fallible human being -- and they're superficially right, but ultimately wrong. Every digital device is essentially an idiot savant, far more efficient at its specific skill than most human beings, but utterly unable to go beyond its own extremely narrow parameters. A device can't make the leaps of inspiration & connection that a human mind can -- particularly a complex, well-educated & experienced human mind.

But what about that vast array of knowledge, accessible to all at the touch of a finger? While many still believe that it allows anyone to learn about anything instantly, in fact it seems to narrow the focus of the human being. You don't have to see or hear anything you don't already agree with; you increasingly self-segregate among like-minded people, existing inside a mirrored bubble that reflects only you. Add to that the usual uses of the digital device -- pop culture trivia, cute viral videos, endless porn, etc. -- and it turns out that very few people are actually expanding their knowledge & experience. They haven't grasped the difference between a constant stream of information bits & a wider, more coherent whole that those bits can create. They focus on the incredibly rich, detailed, shiny surface & never look below it ... and all too often, there's nothing beneath that surface for them, either, certainly nothing of real substance.

What Carr is finally exploring is just how much of our innate human potential we willingly & happily give up for the promise of ease & efficiency -- and it turns out that we get neither, not in the sense of becoming a more wholly developed human beings. Instead, more & more people settle for an simulation of human life, one that's fast, laden with sensation & instant gratification, but lacking in any depth. I'm reminded of an old science-fiction story by John Campbell entitled "Twilight" (circa 1934) -- in the far future, technological supremacy has made human life perfect, with every need & desire attended to with a mere thought ... but curiosity, active intelligence, and genuine quality of inner life have long since vanished. It's precisely this sort of future that Carr is warning us against, by reminding us that our bargain with technology may well be a Faustian one in which we gladly surrender what makes us truly human, all for the sake of shiny distractions. We already let devices do much of our remembering & even thinking for us -- how long before we let them do our feeling for us as well? Most highly recommended!

An eloquent warning about the danger of too much automation
By Reading is Living
In The Glass Cage, Nicholas Carr follows up his previous work on the negative impact that the Internet is having on our brains to argue that automation is likewise diminishing us as human beings. The central argument is that excessive reliance on automation is undermining us both as individuals and as a society.

Carr gives many specific examples showing how automation is deskilling work, lulling us into inattention (sometimes at the cost of lives) and generally producing sub-optimal outcomes. Aviation accidents where pilots have relied too heavily on cockpit automation at the cost of both attentiveness and skill provide the most dramatic examples. However, Carr also points to the Inuit, a Canadian native tripe, that is now using GPS to hunt and as a result losing an ancient ability to navigate. Medicine provides other examples, including he failure of electronic medical records and the downsides of AI in medicine. He also looks at the problems that will arise when military robots and self-driving cars have to make moral decisions, including possibly who to kill.

Carr focuses almost entirely on the humanistic aspects of automation and gives only very limited attention to the question that probably is on most readers minds: What about jobs??? For more on that, I would suggest reading The Lights in the Tunnel: Automation, Accelerating Technology and the Economy of the Future, which offers a comprehensive look at the impact of robots, AI and other automation technology on jobs and the economy.

Carr offers a compelling argument against too much automation, and the book is very thought provoking. However, it gets a bit slow at times. The book grew out of an article that Carr wrote for the Atlantic, and like many books that are expanded versions of magazine articles it sometimes feels a bit stretched. In this case, the author even quotes quite a bit of poetry (something that most readers may or may not find appealing).

There is also the question of whether some of Carr's arguments are really backed by evidence. For example, he argues strongly against what he calls "technology-centered" automation, meaning automation that completely eliminates human input, and instead says we should design systems that keep people "in the loop." However, there is also evidence going the other way. For example in Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-By-Numbers is the New Way To Be Smart, Ian Ayres makes exactly the reverse argument, and shows evidence that algorithms alone outperform both human experts and human experts working in combination with computer algorithms. So it is less that clear what the data really shows here.

Any criticisms aside, this is an important book on a topic that will only become more relevant as computers and robots continue to become more advanced.

Praise for Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices

"An excellent reference tool on how to manage the accounts receivable process for any company. The use of real-life examples makes the concepts easy to understand. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to improve cash flow and reduce bad debt loss."
—Michael E. Beaulieu, Senior Vice President, Finance Cardinal Health

"Rather than simply explaining how to get the greatest return from an investment in accounts receivable, John G. Salek reveals how companies shoot themselves in the foot when management sets policies and procedures without consideration of the impact on cash flow. Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices isn't just for credit and collection professionals who often spend more time cleaning up process errors and other corporate 'garbage,' instead of managing risk. It should be required reading for C-level executives, the sales staff, operations managers, and anybody else whose job impacts the order-to-cash cycle."
—David Schmidt, Principal, A2 Resources Coauthor of Power Collecting: Automation for Effective Asset Management

"Enhancing a company's competitive profile is all about giving enough customers the right product, at the right price, at the right time. This author's real-world approach to accomplishing this goal through the prism of receivables management makes this book a must-read for those companies looking to make their mark as an organization that cares about its customers as well as their own need to produce financial results."
—Bruce C. Lynn, Managing Director The Financial Executives Consulting Group, LLC

"I have worked with John Salek since 1992, both as his client and as a project manager working with his organization. His knowledge of receivables management . . . the technology, the processes, and the formula for success . . . are unsurpassed in the field."
—Stephen L. Watts, Manager, Global Receivables (retired) General Electric Medical Systems

"Mr. Salek has written a masterpiece on the intricacies and management of the accounts receivable portfolio. I would recommend this book to CFOs, controllers, treasurers, credit managers, and small business owners."
—Steve Kozack, Credit Manager Lennox Hearth Products

"Written by an author who has been in the trenches and cites actual examples. This is not written in theory, but from practice."
—Milt Dardis, Collection Consultant Dardis & Associates

Review
“…a useful, informative, enlightening and easy-to-read book.” (Accounting Technician, February 2006)

From the Inside Flap
In today's global marketplace, competitive pressure and industry practice mandate that products and services be sold on a credit vs. cash-on-delivery basis. This practice often produces a receivables asset that is one of the largest tangible assets on a company's balance sheet. Surprisingly, management of this multimillion-dollar (and sometimes multibillion-dollar) asset rarely receives much senior-management attention, except when a serious problem develops. Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices examines the importance of managing accounts receivables and provides proven, field-tested principles for achieving such measurable benefits as increased cash flow, higher margins, and a reduction in bad debt loss.

Author John G. Salek is a veteran financial professional with a successful track record in receivables. Here, he addresses the best practices he has developed, refined, and improved on over a period of sixteen years, while working with more than one hundred companies in a wide range of industries to generate tangible, measurable improvements in the management of customer receivables. Examples, illustrations, anecdotes, and case studies throughout the book illustrate real-world problems and the solutions that inevitably drive measurable results.

Designed for all managers who are either directly responsible for managing the receivables asset—such as directors of customer financial services and credit managers—or indirectly responsible—such as controllers, treasurers, and CFOs—Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices:

  • Shows how to maximize the effectiveness of an accounts receivable management system
  • Illustrates the key benefits that can be achieved through implementation of best practices detailed in the book
  • Provides real-world examples to illustrate key concepts covered
  • Outlines best practices with a proven track record across a variety of industries—within U.S., multinational, and foreign companies—with customers in both private and public sectors
  • Includes discussion of policy and procedures best practices to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley

The time to improve management of this critical asset is now, before interest rates rise further. Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices enables readers to better understand how to manage this important asset while learning the practical techniques that can be implemented immediately to drive improvement.

From the Back Cover

A must read for any A/R clerk, A/R manager, or controller/CFO
By Michael Lewis
This is a very well written book. However, it is not intended for someone who has never been in accounts receivable. There is an assumption that the reader has heard of Sarbanes-Oxley and other accounts receivable terminology. The book provides numerous case studies which are excellent ways the author drove home and supported his points.

As someone who has been in accounts receivable but has never been an A/R manager, I feel very comfortable and confident in interviewing for an A/R manager position now. I was even able to ad a few points to my resume.

The author provides numerous suggestions on how to improve the inflow of cash you, yourself can implement immediately.

I read the entire book in one weekend; 192 pages with many additional case studies in the back as well as throughout the chapters.

You will not be disappointed in this book!

I read this book to brush up in preparation of taking on a major recurring billing system for a Fortune 500 company.

I would recommend this to senior execs who are interested in maximizing their accounts receivable asset or to anyone working on a project to improve their A/R processes.

didn't like it, even though i have a gender creative kid
By mama b
i have a 5 year old daughter who identifies as both boy and girl, depending on the situation and her mood. so i've been searching for books that can help her put language to her feelings and experiences. it seems that most books out there about gender nonconformity are about teaching kids that it's okay for boys to like sparkly, pretty things, but i have found zero books out there about girls who identify as boys -- so i was excited when i heard about "when kathy is keith."

i was disappointed in this book, however -- it was just too negative! i'm not saying that transgender kids don't experience challenges or negativity, but for example:

"her friends make fun of her."
and
"her teacher tells kathy she is being silly."
and
"[his parents] also let keith wear boy's clothes at home."

first off, his REAL friends wouldn't make fun of him, so i disagree with that language. it should have said "some of her classmates make fun of her," NOT "her FRIENDS make fun of her." and having kathy's teacher say that she is silly means that teacher is going to need some serious diversity training -- are there REALLY teachers out there like this? shouldn't we be teaching our kids that they can confide in their teachers, that they are safe and supportive people to talk to? lastly, why would the parents only let him be keith at home? why not let him be keith all the time?

maybe i'm living in a fantasy world, where my 5 year old daughter has been sheltered from negative reactions to the way she dresses and acts. but i live in NORTH TEXAS, and if texans in my town can be accommodating (and in many cases downright supportive), i guess i don't understand why this book didn't include a more positive experience of a little girl who wants to be a little boy.

i don't think i'll be reading this book to my daughter. when and if she ever experiences bullying over this, there seems to be no sense to me in introducing her to the negative side of her gender creativity. i feel like a book like this would actually only make her feel confused about why it's "weird" or "embarrassing" to identify as both boy and girl.

not to say that this book doesn't have any redeeming qualities to it -- i'm sure there are many boys and girls out there who unfortunately haven't had the positive experiences that my daughter has had regarding her nonconformity. but given that her experiences have been overwhelmingly positive in our community, i see no reason to introduce her to the negative and confusing side of being gender creative.

i look forward to the book about kathy being keith, and everyone loving and supporting her for expressing herself, without all the scenes of bullying or denial.

Not a choice
By Judymac
It is a good attempt to describe the difference between innate biology and what some people refer to as 'choice'. The parents' response was very loving, but perhaps a little simplistic. However, for young children, it is appropriate.

The best book ever for writers!
By Suzanne
I read this book years ago when I was just starting to write, and then loaned it out to a friend. Years later, when I began to write again, I realized that I had lost touch with the best book I'd ever read on writing and was able to find a used copy for this now-out-of-print classic. And now, upon rereading my copy, I am again overwhelmed by this man's genius. His advise is spot-on, and his way of explaining why is ALSO spot-on.
If you're a writer, buy everything this man ever wrote (only a few books)and keep them close to you when you sit down at the computer. You won't regret it.

One of the Two Best Books On Writing I've Ever Read!
By Frank S. Scalise
I read this book in 1987. I have read a number of other books about writing, some very good, but for me, this one is one of the two best I've ever read on the subject (the other is King's "On Writing").

One of the things that this book does, as does King's, is explore not only the craft of writing (weed out adverbs, etc.) but also the emotional experience of being a writer. I frequently talk to groups about writing or teach seminars on the subject, and I always try to do the same thing for those writers that Provost did for me. I also quote the sentiment that he expresses in this book -- that "sometimes another writer will understand what the rest of the world will not." I don't think there's been a more evocative, succinct testament to the importance of fellowship...ever.

I know Provost has other books on the topic, and they are surely good, and recommended. But don't pass this one up. It's got game.

author of ALL THAT COUNTS (a novel) and A STREET OFFICER'S GUIDE TO REPORT WRITING (a textbook)

Should be on every writer's bookcase!
By Kourtney Heintz
I'm a fan of Gary Provost. I love his conversational writing style. He says things in a way that makes them easy to grasp and apply to your own writing. This book was written in the 1980s but all of it still applies to writing today. The title alone is a lesson--Make Every Word Count. And he goes on to teach you exactly how to do that. His explanation of writing that works made me rethink my approach to writing. he has a section called "If The Writer is Seen at Work, The Writing Won't Work" that really made me understand that issue in writing. He sets out to communicate and he does a brilliant job doing that. He doesn't make writing obscure or difficult. He clarifies how to do it and do it well. I definitely recommend this book to all writers at any level of their careers. There are many gems in it worth discovering.

3.5 Wide Variety of Core Ingredients and Spices
By 4Nbahu
I am lucky to have access to a diverse expatriate community. I have had the wonderful experience of eating Shawarmas from a variety of countries. Hot thinly sliced spiced meat wrapped in a warm flat bread. Such a simple food item and yet just by changing the type of meat, bread, spices and sauces the variety becomes endless.

This book offers many of the varieties and in addition gives recipes for a shawarma salad, deserts, not to mention some vegetarian options.

More importantly the author gives several different recipes using beef, chicken and lamb. This allows the cook to choose a spice palette that suits the mood or which spices happen to be in the cabinet.

I have a standard check list when I am looking at cookbooks:

CONS:
1. This book has no photos other than the cover.
2. There are no anecdotes of where the author found/ate the recipes included. As she has recipes from several different countries it would have been a good idea as to the taste differences or the eating experience.
3. Some formatting is needed as it would have been better to not only have a title for marinade and sauce but to separate the two by a line break as it was difficult to see what was needed for the different parts as they ran into each other.
4. On my computer could not click on Go>Table of Contents had to click Go>Cover and then forward to the TOC.

PROS:
1. Number of Servings is listed.
2. Preparation time including an allowance for marination was listed.
3. Ingredients for the various parts of the recipe were listed under headings.(see above 3)
4. Ingredients are listed 1 per line.
5. Standard Measurements are used (tbsp, tsp, cup)
6. Instructions are numbered with one step per number.
7. Clickable Table of Contents.

I Recommend this Cookbook.

If you ever had the pleasure of eating these Middle Eastern foods before, you know what I mean. They truly are recipes to die for. If you haven't yet, here is your chance. They are easy to make and so delicious, you will want them even more....like an addiction to healthy, beautiful tasting foods. Please give a recipe a try. From Publishers Weekly
A surrogate mother under contract to Bill and Betsy Stern, Whitehead gave birth to the infant known as Baby M in 1986, but refused to deliver her to the couple, giving rise to a case that generated worldwide publicity and furious argument. PW noted that the book is full of "unblushing self-praise."

Intriguing legal precedents
By EMN
Honestly, I was in elementary school when this legal case occurred. My point in saying that is to explain that I didn't have an opinion regarding the situation of "Baby M" when I began reading.

This was an incredibly intriguing look into surrogacy laws in NJ. It also demonstrates the inexplicable actions of a judge who held a common bias, and for the commentary on the rich vs. poor aspect, it's horrifying that I can actually conceive that this situation would still occur today. Sadly, it would likely have a different outcome, as many women wouldn't have the resources these days to fight this type of legal battle. (I doubt that Gloria Allred would be offering pro bono work for such a case.)

One thing that is clear after reading this is that there were - and are - multiple sides to this story. Most would say that "goes without saying", but it's important to remember, because there are times during Mrs. Whitehead's narrative where she knows she isn't going to come across as a shining angel. She accepts that she's human and that there were circumstances that led to certain events. But I would recommend that readers keep the knowledge that there's more than one side in the forefront of their minds since it's clear that she perceived a negative response from the other couple involved in this heartwrenching true story.

If someone were to ask me if this book should be required reading for a law course, I would unequivocally tell them that it should. This is, without a doubt, a superb accounting of various aspects of the proceedings which were poorly handled throughout. It would also be an interesting exercise for law students to discover whether charges were ever brought against the lower-court judge for his gross mishandling of the case, against any of the officers involved in the initial arrest of Mrs. Whitehead, and against the adoptive parents for their role in deceiving **two** states' courts.

Edward S. Curtis: Visions of the First Americans, by Don Gulbrandsen

Edward S. Curtis: Visions of the First Americans is a tribute to the photographer, his work, but above all to the Native Americans he photographed. Chapters on many different Native American tribes make this collection unique. Edward Curtis's recognizable style, saturated with sepia, is immediately recognizable. He captures not only the striking faces of his subjects, but also a glimpse into the lifestyle of each Native American tribe he photographed. Women grind corn, and communities gather outside their traditional living areas. Atop horses, Native Americans ride on the prarie. Papooses are bundled in woven carrying packs, and men are dressed in full feathered regalia. These images paint a picture, known to us now only as a historical memory. Many tribes are featured in this volume, from the familiar Apache and Navaho to lesser-known tribes. This book will draw in readers who are interested in world cultures, along with photography buffs and historians. This hardcover volume is a wonderful addition to any library.

About the Author
Don Gulbrandsen became a Green Bay Packers fan in the late 1960s when he realized that not only were they the best team around, but they had a running back who shared his name—former Texas Tech star Donny Anderson. This was stunning decision for a young boy growing up in northern Illinois, and whose father was a Chicago Bears fan. Don\u2019s transformation into rabid Packer diehard became complete two decades later when he finally moved to the land of his dreams, Wisconsin. Although the Lindy Infante-coached franchise was struggling mightily at the time, it was great to be living in a place where nearly everyone—man or woman, young or old, black or white—found common ground in their devotion to the Packers. Don relished opportunities to attend games, visit the Packers Hall of Fame, spend Sundays glued to the TV, and while away hours in discussion with friends and coworkers analyzing draft prospects, player injuries, and NFC Central opponents. And when the Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren/Brett Favre/Reggie White era finally arrived, Don—like all Packer fans—was rewarded for his unwavering confidence in the team. Don has spent two decades as a publishing professional, focused primarily on enthusiast books and magazines covering a wide variety of topics: sports, hunting and fishing, home improvement, transportation, collectibles, and more. He has worked as an editor in both magazine and book publishing and is the author of several books.

A coffee-table book people will pick up
By Pharoah S. Wail
This book includes photographs and/or information on the Apache, Jicarilla, Navajo, Pima, Papago, Qahatika, Mohave, Yuma, Maricopa, Walapai, Havasupai, Yavapai, Teton Sioux, Yanktonai, Assiniboin, Apsaroke, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara, Atsina, Piegan, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Yakima, Klickitat, Salishan, Kutenai, Nex Perces, Kwakiutl, Nootka, Haida, Hopi, Hupa, Yurok, Karok, Wiyot, Tolowa, Tututni, Shasta, Achomawi, Klamath, Kato, Wailaki, Yuki, Pomo, Wintun, Maidu, Miwok, Yokuts, Dieguenos, Washo, Tiwa, Keres, Tewa, Zuni, Chipewyan, Cree, Sarsi, Wichita, Cheyenne, Oto, Comanche, Peyote Cult, Nunivak, Eskimos of various bays, islands and capes, as well as others.

I found this book shortly after Christmas of 2007. There may be larger or multi-volume offerings of Edward S. Curtis' photographs, I'm not sure, but this is a very nice one at an affordable price. The background history does not treat him blindly as a hero or villain. It illustrates both his faults and better attributes. The book mentions pictures that are staged, as in the case of Red Dog on page 66. Curtis described the Sioux as living in terrible poverty on the reservation when he photographed them, but one would not know that from the regal photo of Red Dog that clearly points back towards much better times.

The book includes many regions, tribes and ages of people, and in some ways even some of the more negative aspects of his photographs are invaluable because they informed much of the mainstream American (worldwide, really) mythology that surrounds First Nations peoples of North America. The photos are somewhere between documentary and romanticism. Where he could have taken straight documentary photos of poverty and tattered Western/white clothing, he instead staged warrior meetings on horseback and the like. In one sense though, even those seem valuable to me. Not so much as historical data from, say, 1903 when a given photo was taken, but just in the sense that these were the sorts of scenes that the older people in and around these photos would have remembered from their youth.

There are a couple famous faces, such as a lesser-known photo of Red Cloud. You'll also see men who were there at the Battle of the Greasy Grass... er... Little Bighorn.

Curtis' work will always be viewed historically as having good and bad aspects. His work now (even the pay-offs, etc...) is part of American history, and that makes this book important for those of us who can't afford something huge, or whose libraries don't have big collections of the original volumes. One way or the other (and I would guess both), the book will move you.

The paper, binding and cover are all very nice. It feels like a quality book that belies the fact that it's only $20ish for such a big, hardcover book.

I wish there was some way that books like this filtered money back into the communities today. This is by a UK publisher and printed in Hong Kong. At least you can also pick up the fantastic, original "homeland security. Fighting terrorism since 1492" shirts at the westwindworld site where the money does go where you'd like it to go.

The Shadow Catcher Who Sleeps on His Own Breath
By James R. Holland
This is a beautifully printed large-format coffee table book that includes more than 300 Sepia Toned Native American images taken by early 19th Century Pioneer Photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis. The book includes an excellent introduction and helpful picture captions.

The guts of the book are in 20 chapters that match the 20-volume set of books titled "The North American Indian." In this volume, each chapter includes work from each of the original Curtis Series. Most of these pictures are used courtesy of the Library of Congress Collection of Curtis's work.

The Shadow Catcher is the nickname the Native Americans gave the photographer and his camera work. "He Who Sleeps on His breath" was another of the monikers given to Curtis because each night he blew into an inflatable mattress before going to sleep. The nicknames applied to Curtis were typical of the descriptive names of the Native Americans themselves. Many people have at least heard of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Shot in the Hand, Two Moons, Red Cloud, Geronimo and various other famous Native American warriors.

Now most Americans have probably seen some of the most famous photographs that Curtis produced and don't even realize it. Among the most famous images are portraits of Princess Angelina, Red Cloud, Chief Bear's Belly and Chief Red Hawk. Of the scenes are "Canyon De Chelley," (a striking image copied by movie director John Ford among others), "Oasis in the Bad Lands" (which features Chief Red Hawk watering his horse), and "The Vanishing Race."

Based on some of his earliest work photographing Native Americans, Curtis developed a plan. "Before the western Indians and their cultures disappeared completely, somebody needed to reach out to these people, gain their confidence, and record their existence--in words and pictures--before they were gone forever. Curtis believed he was the man to take action in the face of what called a `national tragedy.'"

Curtis decided to make a documentary movie in the Pacific Northwest about the Kwakiutl culture. "The Kwakiutl had a notorious reputation as headhunters and cannibals, " but that didn't frighten Curtis. "Determined to participate in traditional Kwakiutl religious ceremonies, he set out to fulfill the ritualistic requirements of outfitting his boat with a human mummy and skulls. In the process he raided tribal burial islands..."

"It is also possible that he participated in a secret cannibalism ceremony, though even in his old age he would never admit to exactly what happened, adding another layer to the Curtis mystique." One of his fearsome portraits "of a Kwakiutl man, Hamaslahl, wearing a wasp costume representing an inherited crest, was published in Volume X in 1915. It was only one of the wonderful portraits of medicine men and representations of Native American spirits that Curtis documented.

Many of the most interesting pictures for this reviewer included the straightforward pictures of the various types of housing used by the natives. Most people know about Tipis and Igloos but none of the other structures used by various tribes of Native Americans. There are plenty of pictures of the various other huts, lodges and houses on stilts used by Native Americans for centuries.

Over his long and productive life he managed to take 40,000 photos using a large camera format and glass plate 14 X17 inch (and slightly smaller glass plates as time passed) negatives of Native Americans as they were disappearing from the American scene. He also recorded 10,000 Indian songs on wax cylinders, "wrote down vocabularies and pronunciation guides for 75 languages, and transcribed an incalculable number of myths, rituals and religious stories from oral history." He also transferred his music recordings to actual sheet music.

At the same time this reviewer was reading and examining this collection of photographs and their captions, I was also reading and reviewing "Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher" the page-turner biography by Timothy Eagan about the life of Edward S. Curtis. Reading in much greater detail about the problems Curtis experienced getting many of his pictures only makes them that much more meaningful. (Please enjoy my Amazon Review of that title as well as this one).

This is a terrific collection of rare photographs of a vanished way of life.

Stunning Photographs, Mostly Posed
By gotta love the Cretaceous period
This 16 3/4 X 12 inch book with sewn binding and semi-gloss pages with 2 large photos on each page is a great value. At 256 pages, one would think the paper itself would cost more than the book price. Selected from a vast series of photographs Curtis took near the end of America's Westward Expansion, the book includes a biographical account of Curtis himself and a brief description of the American political context in which Curtis made the photographs. This description is insufficient in relaying the impact of all the treaties broken by the American govt. in the course of removing the Indians from their lands and their means of existence. The book points out that Curtis often had to ask his subjects to don their traditional garb for the photograph because by the early 1900s many wore the same clothes as European-Americans. THIS IS NOT A STAND-ALONE BOOK; it provides a rare and rich visual account by a former studio photographer who spent thirty years trying to capture the sympathy of white Americans on behalf of the people they had recently nearly killed off. For that reason, and because Curtis considered himself to be documenting the death of a race, the emphasis is on the past, the "heyday" of Native American cultures. No doubt naivete on Curtis's part, it served well the need of Congress to obliterate the fact that Indians still exist and want justice. Thus the book can also be read as a portrait of good intentions and their insufficiency when they privilege the values of the reigning culture. At least read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in conjunction with this book. Within these constraints, the photographs are stunning.
